Some United States law enforcement and federal government agencies, and many police departments use polygraph examinations to interrogate suspects and screen new employees. Within the US federal government, a polygraph examination is also referred to as a psychophysiological detection of deception examination.
Police departments use polygraphs, also known as lie detectors, for a variety of reasons, including:
- Screening new employees: Polygraphs can be used to screen candidates for sensitive public or private sector employment, including law enforcement jobs at all levels. For example, the FBI uses polygraphs to verify the truthfulness of responses on background investigation forms for police officer candidates.
- Criminal investigations: Polygraphs can be used to interrogate criminal suspects and help determine the truthfulness of individuals involved in criminal cases. They can also help eliminate subjects, determine if a crime has been committed, obtain admissions of guilt, and gather additional information. In some cases, polygraphs can be successful when other investigative techniques have failed.
What's the secret to passing a polygraph exam?
DO NOT LIE.
